A Step-by-Step guide to Learning, Teaching and Performing African Music.
The book and DVD should be used together as tools for the teacher or director to learn and practice this music until the leader is comfortable to teach others by rote.
The gyil is a melodic or tuned idiophone made with a wooden frame and wooden keys. Under each key is a calabash gourd resonator and each gourd resonator is tuned to the same pitch as the key under which it suspends.
Orff alto and bass xylophones can be used to play the arrangements.
The book provides scores and performance notes. The DVD shows the instruction and the music performed by the Macalester College African Music Ensemble on gyils, the college students playing on Orff xylophones, the Turtle Lake Elementary School ensemble on gyils and the Rondo Educational Center ensemble on gyils.
