Christmas Music is GREAT!

As so many others, I love Christmas music.  It can evoke feelings reminiscent of being with family and friends, giving and receiving gifts, and childhood excitement.

I recently had a session with a group of geriatric clients.  The music centered around winter, using old favorites like Let It Snow! and Frosty the Snowman.  One gentleman who rarely speaks sang along with a recording of Bing singing White Christmas.  There was a woman who generally does not participate that accepted a drum and played along enthusiastically.  I even got a response from someone who typically has very minimal responses when I used music from her favorite era – Elvis’ Blue Christmas.  Everyone seemed to be with me in the moment and benefiting from the experience.

For that old favorite We Wish You a Merry Christmas try singing “I” instead of “we.”  Especially in a hospice session or one-on-one setting that small change can make a big difference.

After Thanksgiving I’m always pleased to be in the season for enjoying the classic Christmas music that has been part of our culture for decades.  Not only for my own personally delight, but also because I know how dear the people I see hold the old carols.  It’s hard to pick just one favorite!
