About Judy Carmichael
Grammy nominated pianist Judy Carmichael is one of the world's leading interpreters of stride piano and swing. Count Basie nicknamed her "Stride", acknowledging the command with which she plays this technically and physically demanding jazz piano style. Judy's newly released CD "Come and Get It" also features her singing debut.
Carmichael was born in California and moved to New York in the early 1980s. She has toured with various jazz ensembles throughout India, Portugal, Brazil and Singapore. In 1992 Carmichael became the first jazz musician sponsored by the United States to tour China. She has played in a variety of venues from Carnegie Hall, to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice. Her programs have included such musicians as Joel Grey, Michael Feinstein, Steve Ross and the Smothers Brothers. She has performed on television and radio and has performed private recitals for Rod Stewart, Robert Redford and former President Bill Clinton. She has appeared frequently on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion and has also been featured on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. In addition to touring with her jazz ensemble, she has written two books on stride piano and numerous published articles on jazz music.
