How to Find a Music Therapist

Posted on 3rd March 2010 by Kelly, MA, MT-BC

As music therapy grows as a profession, it seems that more and more people tell me, "Help!  I need a music therapist!  Where can I find one?".

Now, if you live in Eastern Iowa or Western Illinois my initial response would of course be, "West Music"!  However, many people that I talk to do not live in the area.  In fact, just looking at the comments left on some of our website pages show that there are people all over the United States and world that are interested in finding music therapy services for their loved ones.

As mentioned in blogs before, when shopping for a music therapist, it is important to find a music therapist that has the credential MT-BC or Music Therapist Board Certified.  This credential means that the therapist has passed the Board Examination and is being held to the standards set forth by the board.

There is a website for the Certification Board, which is:  http://www.cbmt.org/  On their website you will see:

Click on the link and you can search for a therapist by Name, City, State or Certification Number.  The only downside to this search is that contact information is not listed; however you can often look them up on Google or in your local phone book to get their contact information.

Hopefully, this will get you on your way to finding a music therapist in your area!  If you are still having troubles, you can always look at http://www.musictherapy.org/ which is the American Music Therapy Association's (AMTA) website.  You can find information about music therapy and contact the organization to see if they know of any music therapists in your area, although, not every music therapist is a member of AMTA.
