Human Jukebox
I have a great hospice patient who is sweet, and positive, and just a bright spot in my day. She usually gives me something to think about. One day she told me how fortunate I was to “know so many songs”. It was a passing comment, but it got me thinking. It’s true. What a great joy it is to have the vast musical library that we music therapists hold in our heads every day! We have a little jukebox in our heads. Our clients request something, and we usually know it. It’s a pretty amazing thing, when you consider the decades of music, popular and obscure, secular and sacred that we have in our repertoire. Of course, all of this music may not be memorized and guitar-ready, but it’s still amazing to know it. Sometimes I picture myself in a nursing home with some young music therapist. I wonder if they’ll be able to stump me. If I continue to learn new music, and my brain cooperates, it doesn’t seem likely. That really is a gift. And working with people who bring you joy and insight is a gift too.
