What is the World Music Drumming Curriculum?

The World Music Drumming Curriculum was published by Will Schmid in 1997, following an 18-month pilot project. The curriculum was designed to accomplish several goals. The first goal was to bring the excitement and motivation of world music and drumming from African and the Caribbean to general music curriculums. The format of the program is designed to build important work and community skills, such as communication and listening; cooperative teamwork; and respect for others. While the original curriculum was developed as a 30-lesson curriculum for middle school general music classes, it has since expanded to multiple grade levels and publications for children through adults. The program was created to help establish strong connections with other subjects, and engage students through an active, hands-on approach. Much more than simply drums, the program has shown outstanding success at engaging all students in hand drumming traditions (West Africa, the Caribbean, and others) combined with singing, moving, playing other instruments, and creating. World Music Drumming summer workshops include multiple levels from introductory through advanced, and are designed for teachers, counselors, community recreation leaders, church musicians, and players.

2011 World Music Drumming Courses supplied by West Music

The following is a list of World Music Drumming certification courses for which West Music will be providing books and instruments in summer 2011. Recommended materials and a book and instrument store will be available on site. At all of these workshops West Music will provide instruments, drums and unpitched percussion instruments that will be used in the classes.
