Music Therapists-Uke Can Rock!
By Staff Music Therapist
5/8/2012 3:27:00 PM

Do you have a ukulele yet, music therapists? I’m really enjoying mine! My project last summer was to teach myself, and it went pretty well. I wouldn’t consider myself a virtuoso, but it’s a pretty easy transition from guitar. Online you can find any song you want to learn and some chord charts—you’re good to go! Come on, what’s cooler than Adele on ukulele? (Except maybe the Eddie Vedder album?..) Another perk for playing ukulele is the easy transport. I can stack it with the other items in my rolling cart or carry it upstairs without back strain. It’s great for your brain to learn something new and a great novelty for clients as well. Pick up a high-quality uke today!

Creative Juice

This summer has been so much fun, because I have been learning about creativity! It’s been refreshing! What makes us creative? What makes our creativity stagnate? How can we spark new creativity?

Challenging ourselves to try new things is great for our brains. I’ve been learning the ukulele, trying out some art-related projects, and reading “The Artist’s Way”. Trying new things is inspiring and rejuvenating!

There are so many great websites out there, and I don’t want to plagiarize, so I’ll just direct you do a few.  Try some things from these sites and be pleasantly surprised at how good you feel:

Easter Music Therapy Intervention
By Staff Music Therapist
4/8/2011 4:08:00 PM

One of the things I look forward to during Easter is the chance to color eggs. I’ve found that young children also enjoy talking about the paint involved in the traditional holiday activities. I find that this discussion can easily lead to a fun book called “Ain’t Gonna Paint No More” by Karen Beaumont. I like to pair the book with singing and using an instrument. I’ve used rhythm sticks or rhythm sticks with scarves tied to them. I’ve used just scarves to symbolize the paint. I’ve also used the cabasa to paint on the body parts. Kids really enjoy this fun intervention, which addresses body part identification, color identification, and rhyming words.
