Emily is originally from Northern Minnesota. She attended Bemidji High School where a love of piano was born. After high school she moved to Waterville, Maine where she attended Colby College and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She had a variety of experiences teaching – most notably for a month in Kalimpong, India as a Resident Music Instructor at the Gandhi Ashram School.
Emily also holds a Masters Degree in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As a graduate teaching assistant she taught group piano, private lessons, and was awarded the Mary Brake Music Fund grant in 2011 to teach low income elementary students. Aside from teaching lessons, Emily accompanies the choir at India Hills Community College.
While at Colby, Emily won the Concerto Competition in 2008, the Music Department Performance Prize in 2010, and the Molly Seltzer Yett Prize for Excellence in Music Academics in 2010. Emily believes that it is important to create a positive and supportive learning environment and that playing piano should be an enjoyable activity, so she considers her students’ goals and preferences when choosing their repertoire.
