Hardwood Music specializes in wooden tongue drums, combining their acoustic expertise with the art of woodworking and modern design. The company traces its roots back to the 1970s when founder Michael Thiele quit his job as a sociology professor to pursue his passion for creating wood percussion instruments. After creating a drum for his wife to replace a broken one, the “drum building” bug bit him, resulting in the opening of a Hardwood Music shop in Cave Creek, Arizona. Today, the company is still family-run and continues to craft instruments from their store in Flagstaff. Their creative history includes over 40 designs and 200 different melodic tunings.
In addition to specialty products, Hardwood Music offers a variety of standard log drums with mallets included. These include small drums, four pitch drums, six key drums, large drums, and jumbo 12-note drums. Each instrument boasts beautiful, hand-selected domestic and exotic hardwoods and is perfect to a specific scale. Professional musicians and educators appreciate Hardwood Music's exceptional quality, visual appeal, and the ease with which novice and experienced percussionists produce new and exciting music.
