Coralville Musician of the Month, May 2013 - Althea Downing
Althea, a 1st grader at Lucas Elementary, started taking lessons with Tara McGovern in the summer of 2011.
She says, “I’ve learned lots of new songs in the last two years. I can play songs with both hands and chords on the piano. On the fiddle I am learning old songs, Irish jigs, and reels. The hardest one I have learned is a jig called ‘Tripping up the Stairs’. I have performed in three recitals at West Music.”
Althea takes dance lessons at UI Youth Ballet and is a member of Girl Scout Daisy Troop 5166. She likes to play with her friends and her sister, read, swim, go hiking, and ride bikes. This spring she will be in her first dance performance.
Althea’s dad plays guitar and mandolin; mom plays piano and flute; and younger sister, Naomi, is learning piano and also takes lessons from Tara. The whole family likes to sing together!
