Alice teaches trumpet, French horn and piano here at West Music in Marion. She began her first instrument, piano, at age seven and was teaching by age 11. She developed a syllabus on her Big Chief tablet and went around the neighborhood selling lessons. She has also taught at Tougaloo Southern Christian College and various Cedar Rapids schools.
Alice has a teacher’s certificate from Sherwood Music School in Chicago, an BA and BS from Coe College and an MA from University of Iowa as well as lessons and educational courses.
She is the Music Director at Asbury United Methodist Church. Alice directs, plays and plans all the service music.
Alice is a world traveler and has been to the United Kingdom, Russia, France, Czechoslovakia and Germany with stops in Norway and Finland. Meredith Wilson has played one of her compositions and she has played for composer Samuel Barber. Her favorite thing about teaching is a good lesson.
A high point for her was when she played the Paramount Theater organ before the teachers meeting and at the end she put on a three foot sombrero decorated with bananas and played “Tico tico”. She has a Gazette photo of this performance.
