Marion June Teacher Feature: Jim Jenkins
By West Music Conservatory

James Jenkins teaches many instruments including piano, organ, Scottish Highland bagpipes, and voice. He has taught in the Cedar Rapids Community School district for 21 years, Isaac Newton Academy for 4 years, and here at West Music for 5 years. He also has a home studio that he has been teaching from for 39 years!

Jim received his Bachelor of Music in piano performance and choral music education from the University of Iowa. He also works as a customer service representative with General Dynamics Information Technology. He is the organist at New Covenant Bible Church. Jim is the piper for Turlach Ur, which is Iowa’s largest and fastest growing Scottish Pipes and Drums Band.

In his spare time he enjoys model railroading, fishing, tennis, and reading. He has recently traveled to the United Kingdom and Europe.

Jim says his favorite thing about teaching is working towards an “a-ha! Moment” in understanding music and helping to build confidence in students through music performances and programs.

Jim has performed with the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale for 25 years, and Chorale Midwest for 10 years. He has also performed with Orchestra Iowa and Iowa Scottish Highlanders.
