judy pineJudy Pine is a Vice President of Music Education at West Music Company with responsibility for the elementary general music catalog division.  She has been Industry Representative for both AOSA (The American Orff Schulwerk Association) and OAKE (The Organization of American Kodaly Educators).  Judy travels extensively to state and national music education conferences and summer teacher training programs.  These include Orff Schulwerk, Kodaly and World Music Drumming.

Judy’s experience in the elementary general music classroom along with 30 years of experience at West Music make her a leading expert in this field.

  • What is your background in music, and how do you use that to help our customers?
I was a piano major in college with the plan to be a HS choir director. It was during my junior year in college when taking an music methods class, I learned about Orff Schulwerk, Kodaly, Laban Movement.  I was hooked and changed my focus to elementary music education right then!  Before my first elementary music teaching position, I was fortunate enough to take an Orff Schulwerk Level One workshop in Des Moines, IA.  Being a teacher helps me to understand the type of materials and instruments best suited for classrooms still today.

  • What do you think are the strongest services that you can offer our customers
Working with teachers to find just what they need for their students and classrooms.  We listen to their needs and help their wishes become realities.
  • What do you think sets West Music apart from the rest of the pack?
Our staff, we have music educators, musicians and music supporters ready to help customers in any way possible.  We aren’t just a website or a catalog house – but personal shoppers for customers wherever they are.  We’re teachers helping teachers – every day!

  • What about West Music makes you the most proud?
How we’ve grown from a regional catalog in 1980 to a national presence on the web.  In our little world, we’re very well known as THE place to go when it comes to elementary general music education needs.

  • Describe a time when you were musically involved in helping a customer.
At summer World Music Drumming courses, I’m there playing along with my classmates as we learn new ensembles and techniques.  This knowledge helps me to relate to their needs in the future.

  • Where do you see West Music developing in the future?
We’ve really gotten into children’s literature which relates to musical themes, whether it’s illustrated songs to musical styles or poetry to sound exploration.  It’s a great way to provide cross-curricular opportunities for teachers in their classrooms.  Plus it’s just so much fun!

  • Describe the rapport that you develop with customers.
It’s fun to meet teachers face to face who I have worked with over the phone or by email.  I love to put the face with the name.

  • What aspects of music education have you most excited right now?
Elementary general music always has me excited – I’ll never tire of it as there are always new ideas and materials out there to learn about and share.
