Karen Schmidt

Karen Schmidt has been taking drum lessons with Wes Weeber for a little over a year and a half. Her interest in drumming peaked a few years ago while she was visiting her daughter and her friends in Chicago. After dinner, the party goers all picked up their instruments and had an impromptu jam session. Karen, sans instrument, made makeshift drums from spoons and various objects and joined in. That Christmas her daughter gave her two drum pads as a gift, and she has been drumming ever since!

Karen has always been musically inclined, beginning piano lessons at 6 years old and eventually graduating from Drake University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Some of her most recent musical accomplishments include, but are certainly not limited to, playing with The Catfish Jazz Society and jumping on stage with The Old 57’s during an MS fundraiser at Genesis Medical Center last Christmas where she played Wipeout!

Karen herself is in remission from MS and completely free of all the medication she was instructed to take in the past.  Karen may be our oldest drumming student, chronologically speaking, at 76 years young, but you would never know it. She is full of life and positive energy- a true inspiration, reminding us that you can follow your dreams at any age. She is the proud mom of two daughters and one son, and also has two cats, Snickers (who has 6 toes on each foot) and Marley.

Keep on keeping on, Karen! We hope to have you grace us with your skills at the next Weekend Warriors!
