Clara was homeschooled and began taking piano lessons at the age of five, which was one of her only extracurricular activities. She had about six different instructors along the way until she went off to college. She began teaching at the age of 17.
Clara and another West Music instructor, Paul Benevides, attended church together and he encouraged her to join the West Music Conservatory. She also met Cathi Dorr when she would come in to peruse the music selection and was treated so nicely that she hopped aboard! We are lucky to have her! She lives on a family farm, working many hours alongside her family to maintain it. She still finds the time to volunteer for “Grow,” an organization that helps women overcome addiction, and the afterschool program “Lydia Home” in Davenport.
Clara loves studying foreign languages and traveling. She took a trip to Romania this summer and worked at a youth camp in the mountains, leaving her with one of her fondest memories. As she was walking back to her cabin, the kids were singing around the campfire, a capella, in Romanian. She described it as one of the most beautiful sounds and feelings she has experienced in her life. Imagine that if you can! Not only is she a fantastic music instructor, but Clara also spends much of her time writing poetry and journaling. She has goals to someday have a book published based on all the people she has met and the experiences she has had through teaching music. Clara enjoys studying the Bible, has a dog named Bethy and numerous chickens and geese.
