Quad Cities February 2014 Musician of the Month: Emma Vanvooren

Emma VanvoorenEmma has been taking guitar lessons with Andy Cowan for over a year. Because of her hard work and dedication, she was selected for this session of Weekend Warriors.

Her favorite band is “My Chemical Romance” and she finds much inspiration in a simple quote by Gerard Way, the co-founder and lead singer for the band, “Be Creative.”

When asked if there was one piece of advice she would like to offer to people she stated, “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that something is not possible.”  She definitely subscribes to this way of thinking as evidenced by her Black belt status in Tae Kwon Do by the age of fifteen. She informed me that she could easily beat up Andy because of this. Andy wholeheartedly agrees.

One of her most memorable moments was when she joined her first play, “Phantom of the Campfire” in junior high. She truly appreciated the “sense of family” she felt from being immersed in the acting environment.

Emma and her family live on a self-sustaining farm. They grow much of their own food and raise chickens, goats, and horses.

Emma plans on attending the Chicago Institute of Art when she graduates with a focus on Audio Production. Without a doubt, she wants to be in a band, completely unaffected with the obsession of fame, instead focusing her energies on the intent to help people and change lives through her music. Her career backup plan, secondary to her drive to be in a successful band, is to become a Music Producer.

Noteworthy: Emma is not a fan of the group “One Direction”…not even a little bit.
