Since 1990, Mary Schneider has been teaching flute to beginners thru advanced players, along with Suzuki and traditional methods.
Mary has a BM in music education from the University of Iowa and a MM in Flute Performance from the University of Northern Iowa. Her first instrument was a drum in her first grade teachers rhythm band. She has been playing flute since 5th grade and had wanted to play flute since attending her brothers band concert as a little girl. As a child, Mary’s family moved a lot and being in band allowed her to make a good transition from school to school.
Mary began her teaching career in Reinbeck, Iowa as a K through 6th grade general music teacher as well as teaching the 5th and 6th grade band. She also has served as a long term substitute for the band program. As a private instructor, Mary taught for the Suzuki School and maintains a private studio at West Music.
She emphasizes tone production and finger techniques in lessons through scales, etudes, solos, and ensemble participation. Mary teaches beginner, intermediate, and advanced flute. She accepts students from age 8 to adult. If child is under 8, they should consult the studio coordinators first. Her missed lesson policy is that lessons can be rescheduled provided at least two weeks advanced notice is given in the case of vacations. In the case of illness or a family emergency, please notify the store as soon as possible otherwise the tuition is due since the studio time has been booked.
Mary is also the director for the West Music Christmas Flute Choir each year. She was music director for the Reinbeck theater guild for five years. She enjoys playing for churches and weddings. She also enjoys flower and vegetable gardening. Enjoys traveling. Her favorite trip was to Turkey. She also likes going on cruises.
