Coralville December 2016 Musician of the Month: Carly Ephraim
By West Music Company
12/1/2016 8:00:00 AM
Carly was nominated by her percussion teacher, Brian Cooper. She’s been in lessons with him for approximately 6 months, playing drums and bells. She also plays bass in her school orchestra and studies piano with Jason Sifford in the West Music lessons program.

Carly is 11 years old and in the 5th grade. She wants to learn to play many instruments! She likes attending concerts, playing songs she knows, and sharing her music with others. Her favorite musicians are Joan Jett, Train, Tom Petty and other rock music. She is also interested in Art, Pokémon cards, hanging out with sisters and friends.

Her teacher, Brian Cooper, has this to say about working with Carly:

"Carly rocks! She's a multi-instrumentalist, also playing piano and bass. In the short time I've known her as a drum student she has shown great dedication and impressive growth as a percussionist with a very bright future. She is as great of a person as she is a musician!"

Congratulations, Carly!

Extraordinary Associate of the Month October 2016: James Fleming
By West Music Company
11/1/2016 8:00:00 AM
We are happy to announce James Fleming as the West Music October 2016 Associate of the Month!

Since James started with West Music, he has helped lead the Mezzanine through a very successful and organized rental season. With the help of a brand new rental program and process, James and his team successfully filled roughly 1,300 rental instruments this past fall.

Always staying on top of store audits and having a non-existing wait list, his attitude and calm personality, and his willlingness and eagerness to learn, makes him an asset to West Music.

James is willing to take on any challenge that is put in front of him, all the while exceeding expectations.

The fall rental season is always busy for everyone. This past season, James made a challenging and stressful time seem easy.

- As told by Alex Beamer,
Director of Regional School Music

Congratulations James! Keep up the good work, and thanks for all you do!

Coralville November 2016 Musician of the Month: Rana Saba
By West Music Company
11/1/2016 8:00:00 AM
Rana Saba is a 4th grade student in Coralville. She has been taking voice lessons with Jessica Saunders at West Music for almost a year. Her teacher, Jessica, has this to say about working with her:

“Rana is an exceptional student. Since starting lessons she has performed on many recitals and completed two theory work books. She has a lovely voice and wants to learn all she can!”

Rana loves to sing because it is fun! She likes to learn about the notes because it is interesting and also helps in her school music class.  She has some great advice to share with other musicians: “Work hard and listen to the teacher, practice until you can sing without the words, and try to pretend there is nobody there when there is a recital (when you're nervous)."

Her favorite musicians are Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, and Katy Perry.  She also loves the music from Annie and Disney movies. Her favorite animal is the Red Panda.  In Rana’s free time she enjoys gymnastics, swimming, computers, comics, playing with dogs, and eating ice cream! Rana has lived in three countries and speaks English, Arabic and, some German.

Congratulations, Rana! Great job!

Coralville September 2016 Musician of the Month: Aubryn Kaine
By West Music Company
9/2/2016 8:00:00 AM
Aubryn is a freshman at City High School in Iowa City. She has studied cello with Christina Gentzsch for 4 years and has also had a year of voice lessons with Jessica Saunders. Her musical goals are to get into All State Orchestra during high school. She would also like to pursue a degree in music or the arts.

Aubryn has a great perspective on music! We asked her what she loves about playing music and she responded, “The way that I feel afterwards and while I’m playing. If I’m stressed, worried, nervous, or even overly excited, I start to sing or play my cello and I come out calmer and ready to take whatever’s next. I also love making music, not just playing notes on a page. The difference is hard to learn and apply, but when I succeed, it’s amazing.” Her advice to other musicians is to keep playing even when it gets challenging and to repeat things over and over until you have it. Her favorite artist is Lindsey Stirling, and she loves instrumental music as well as 80’s music.

Activities that Aubryn enjoys include orchestra, cross country and track (and running “just for the heck of it”), fencing, dance, engineering and math, reading and language arts. She has studied Tae Kwon Do since she was 4 ½ years old and earned her 3rd degree black belt just before turning 10 years old!

Congratulations, Aubryn!

Coralville July 2016 Musician of the Month: Ella Anneling
By West Music Company
7/6/2016 8:00:00 AM
Ella has studied violin with Gayla Drake for 3 years.  She was nominated as the Musician of the Month because of her hard work and accomplishments this year.   She recently focused on preparing for an audition for her school talent show, was selected to perform and played the piece perfectly!

Ella is 10 years old and will be in the 5th grade next year at Coralville Central elementary school.   In addition to the violin, she plays soccer and enjoys writing.   She also excels at math and scored very high on her advanced placement tests this spring.

Ella’s older brother, Erik, also studied violin with Gayla Drake.  Gayla has this to say about working with Ella: “I love working with Ella, she's smart and creative, and has such interesting taste in music! She once commented that she was impressed by the ability to create a piece of music from an idea or emotion. Being a composer, that got me excited, because that's where music composition starts. I can't wait to see what Ella does with music during the remainder of her school years and beyond.”

Congratulations, Ella!

Coralville July 2016 Teacher Feature: Jessica Saunders
By West Music Company
7/6/2016 8:00:00 AM
Jessica has been performing since she was seven and teaching privately since 2007. Growing up, she competed in the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Iowa State Fair for fifteen years. She was a Sprout Champion in 1999 and a Senior Finalist in 2007. She loves the competition because it gives youth all over the state the opportunity to perform and practice their craft. Saunders and her students have appeared in multiple productions with City Circle Community Theatre, Young Footlighters, Iowa City Community Theatre and other groups.  In addition to private lessons instruction and community performance, she works as an adjunct vocal music professor at Waldorf College.

Jessica is finishing work on her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at the University of Iowa. She currently holds her Master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and her Bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College.

Jessica teaches both classical voice and musical theater style to students of varying skill levels from sages 6 to adult. She believes in building confidence in her students and strives to work with each student to explore their individual skills and talents.
