Do You and Your Coworkers Rock? West Music Sponsors CBJ’s Battle of the Bands
By West Music Company
6/6/2017 3:56:00 PM
Corporate Battle of the BandsIs your office mate a rock star in disguise? You might be surprised!

West Music is proud to be sponsoring CBJ’s 2nd Annual Corporate Battle of the Bands. This contest showcases the musical talents of employees in Eastern Iowa. Businesses are encouraged to form their own bands and compete for the tile of Best Corporate Band!

This is West Music’s second year sponsoring CBJ’s event. While West Music employees are not eligible to participate (too many pros at our company), the event fits with our larger mission to encourage people of all ages and occupations to “Play now. Play for life.”

CBJ will be accepting band nominations through Monday, June26, 2017. Then, six bands will be chosen to compete at a live competition from 6-9 p.m. on August 24, 2017 at Big Grove Brewery & Taproom in Iowa City.

$1000 grand prize Similar to American Idol, the bands perform and then receive feedback from a distinguished panel of judges. West Music’s own Alex Beamer will be one of the judges, along with Rob Cline of Hancher and Tim Hankewich of Orchestra Iowa.

The winning band will receive $1,000 credit to spend at West Music, $1,000 to give to their favorite charity, a traveling trophy and bragging rights! They will also be invited to headline CBJ’s Coolest Places to Work event in September.

The CBJ’s competition has a few simple requirements: at least half of the band’s members must work at the company the band represents, and the lead singer must work at the company. All music styles are encouraged. Last year music styles ranged from pop and country to alt rock and reggae!

To nominate your band or buy tickets to the event, go to corridorbusiness.com/events and click on Corporate Battle of the Bands.

Money for Music Winner: Sheila Baer
By West Music Company
5/21/2014 11:01:00 AM

Congratulations to the Grand Prize Winner of West Music's Money for Music contest, Sheila Baer! Shelia shared this story about how she supports her music classroom and some of her fundraising ideas - and we loved it so much that we chose her as our Money for Music winner!  Thanks for sharing your ideas with us, Shelia!  As a way of saying thanks, we'll be giving her a $1,500 West Music Gift Card to spend on her classroom!

"I have an incredible PTO in my building.  I do a grade level performance for each grade in my building which helps our PTO be successful.  For example, third grade is the month of December, with the PTO annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction in the Fall.  I auction off 2 certificates for each grade level at the silent auction for 4 front row seats.  These certificates can bring anywhere from $100-200 each.  This is pocket change in getting good quality instruments in my classroom, but parents love to sit in the red covered chairs in the front row at their child's program.  It is a fun way to gain some extra funds, and the chair covers I bought at a 2nd hand store!"

January Money for Music Winner: Carly Huhn
By West Music Company

Carly HuhnCongratulations to the February 2014 winner of West Music's Money for Music contest, Carly Huhn!  Carly shared this story about how she supports her music classroom and some of her fundraising ideas.  Thanks for sharing the ideas with us, Carly!  As a way of saying thanks, we'll be giving her a $100 West Music Gift Card to spend on her classroom!

"One person who had to raise support for her living expenses shared, “This experience is like a treasure hunt. The money is out there, you just have to know where to find it.” I agree completely when it comes to fundraising.

My name is Carly Huhn, and I teach general music at Bowman Woods Elementary School. Bowman Woods is one of seven elementary schools in the Linn-Mar district, a 4A school in eastern Iowa. There are approximately 400 Kindergarten through 5th grade neighborhood students.

When I arrived at my school, there were already many resources in place. However, many instruments were lacking or in need of replacing. My classroom desperately needed Orff, classroom, and folk instruments. In addition, I wanted to provide live artist performances for students to watch.

There are many different fundraising opportunities available, but the best way I have found is through writing grants. Grants are a funding source whose does not need to be reimbursed by the applying organization. Some examples of grants are foundations (through the county, school district, or business corporations), educational grants (government programs such as Arts in Education), and professional music organizations (where the music teacher is a member such as Organization of American Kodaly Educators and Sigma Alpha Iota). All the teacher needs to do is provide the requested information by the deadline. Once you fill out the application, watching your school mailbox becomes an event you look forward to everyday because there could be good news!

In the past five years of teaching in Iowa, I have helped write over $15,000 in grants to purchase instruments, provide funds for field trips, and bring in professional musicians. I am constantly considering my students’ needs and providing them with quality education. The treasure is out there—you just need to look for it!"

January Music for Money Winner: Mandy Lauterbaugh
By West Music Company

Mandy LauterbaughCongratulations to the January 2014 winner of West Music's Money for Music contest, Mandy Lauterbaugh!  Mandy shared this story about how she supports her music classroom and some of her fundraising ideas.  Thanks for sharing the ideas with us, Mandy!  As a way of saying thanks, we'll be giving her a $100 West Music Gift Card to spend on her classroom!

"We have a Band Booster parent organization that takes charge of the fundraising for our programs(band and vocal) since the school is very sports-oriented and spends very little to keep the programs up-to-date. The Booster organization has been very helpful in repairing instruments, buying new instruments and music, and sending the kids on trips to see a musical as well as the ISU Band Extravaganza every year. The students sell Ar-We-Va clothing in the fall and in the spring they sell boxes of fruit and meat from the local locker. We also started putting out an old snare drum as a donation box after concerts, while the parents are enjoying cookies and bars provided by the booster parents. I have applied for some new instruments using the DonorsChoose website and we received those this past January. I have also applied for some new music through the same website as well as applied for a couple of extra grants, but have not received anything from those as of yet. We are in need of many things - instruments that are in good working condition and updating our music library are a couple of the major ones. The local newspaper also gives people the option of donating to school organizations when they renew their subscriptions and we receive quite a few donations every school year. In the future, I would like to see all of the current fundraising options continue, but maybe include a fundraising meal in conjunction with a community performance."

October Money for Music Winner: Sara Rond
By West Music
10/4/2013 8:35:00 AM

Sara RondCongratulations to the October 2013 winner of West Music's Money for Music contest, Sara Rond!  Sara shared this story about how she supports her music classroom and some of her fundraising ideas.  Thanks for sharing the ideas with us, Sara!  As a way of saying thanks, we'll be giving Sara a $100 West Music Gift Card to spend on her classroom!

My name is Sara Rond, and I am one of two music teachers at Ethridge Elementary School in Garland, Texas. We are a Title One school with a demographic that includes 90% of our student's on free/reduced lunch and a variety of cultural backgrounds, including a large population of Vietnamese families. Due to the amount of low-economic families in our school, our fundraisers aren't able to be as straight forward as selling candles, gift-wrapping, chocolate, etc. Therefore, we complete several smaller fundraisers throughout the year that aren’t dependent on our families to complete.

We have a parent volunteer that makes homemade quilts to be sold in our front office all year long. Any funds made from these quilts are split between music and our 5th grade camp trip.

Once a month, our principal allows the student’s to have a “Popcorn Day” during their lunchtime. A movie is shown during lunch and the student’s may purchase a small bag of popcorn for 50 cents.

We are constantly thinking of ways to revamp our fundraising opportunities that won’t interfere with our family’s day-to-day life. Our music department puts on a student program once a month for the parents and community. We do not charge admission for these events, because we want to encourage everyone to attend. However, we’re beginning to brainstorm selling refreshments at each event.

Our administration believes in providing our student’s with experiences no matter their financial ability. Whether those experiences are in music, Student Council, Honor Choir or any of the grade level field trips. Because of the wide variety of needs for fundraising, our school combines all benefits from fundraising and applies the funds wherever they are needed. Our student’s never miss out on an opportunity because of money!

September Money for Music Winner: Kate Hagen
By Ryan West
9/9/2013 9:01:00 PM

September's winning entry comes from Kate Hagen from Horn Elementary in Iowa City, IA!  Her winning entry nets her a $100 West Music Gift Certificate!  Keep the great ideas coming and send them along for next month's drawing!

From Kate Hagen, in her own words,

At Horn Elementary we needed to replace a bass xylophone and also purchase a new soprano xylophone.  So I came up with the idea to do a change drive. Students brought in spare change on the first Friday of the month and were able to wear a hat all day.

At our first all school assembly we shared our goal with the students and pumped them up about getting new instruments. To help motivate students, the total amount raised was announced at the end of the day and the class that brought in the most money rewarded with a sucker.

To motivate and inform parents I sent home the Every Penny Counts flyer, explaining what we were trying to accomplish with the coin drive. As additional motivation, I included the cost of a large specialty coffee at several different restaurants in our area and asked parents to consider giving up their morning coffee for one day and donate that money to the coin drive instead.

To keep track of our progress I made a large xylophone and posted it in the front of the school. Initially all of the bars were black as we raised money the blackened bars were replaced with colored ones revealing the amount raised. We added a bar for every $175 raised, with the ultimate goal of raising $2600.

The first month we raised over $600. By the end of the school year we had raised $2476. My principal funded the remaining amount. I believe this fundraiser was successful because every child was able to participate regardless of his or her socio-economic situation. Every penny counted and it did not matter how much they brought in, just that they participated.

Congratulations to our November Pin It to Win It Winner - Michael Vincent!

We are pleased to announce our December winner for our Pin It To Win It contest! A big congrats to Michael Vincent - a first year music teacher in Arkansas. What first struck us about Michael's Pinterest board is the short write-up describing his position as a music teacher:

"I am a first year teacher in a school in Arkansas where I teach band, choir, and general music! We may not have a ton of supplies but we have a lot of great musical students. I love West Music products and have found great success with students using these quality products! I think a zip code should not define a student's education and especially should not limit a student's musical experiences!"

Michael then proceeded to fill his board with a variety of West Music products, lesson ideas, and classroom practices. Most notable was the variety in pins - he included mariachi instruments, print music, and movement materials. We hope Michael can continue his hard work in the classroom and continue to inspire his students with a $100 West Music gift certificate!
