I've Always Wanted To...
Written by Joanie Mercy

Every so often, I look back at my life and say "I wish I would have…" And sometimes, I see or hear of someone doing something exciting, daring, or extravagant and say "I’d really like to…" What keeps us from doing things we'd really like to do -- like playing a musical instrument?

Fear of the Unknown

Many times we sell ourselves short. I believe we all have special talents and may be predisposed to being extraordinary at some things and mediocre at others. But I also believe that if we really want to do something, in most cases, we can. It's the fear or the lack of confidence in ourselves that holds us back. Humans are miraculous creatures with a limitless ability to learn. So go ahead and take that leap of faith -- you can't succeed if you don't try!

Misinformation

I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say:

• "I'd love to learn to play the violin, but I've heard it's the most difficult instrument in the world to learn."

• "I've never played an instrument before, and I'm too old to learn."

• "Reading music must be hard -- like learning a second language."

None of the above are true.

Where do people get this misinformation? If you search the Web for information, be sure of your source. If you talk to an "expert," talk to at least one more, so you get varied opinions.

Feeling Overwhelmed

Rome was not built in a day. It will take time to master musical skills, so be patient. Celebrate all the little steps you take along the way. If you're a researcher and reader, don't be overwhelmed by all the details. Take little bites at a time and chew well.

In time, YOU will be an expert!
