The Arts Impact in Education

Ever since the federal No Child Left Behind Education Act first took effect in 2002, music educators and researchers have focused their attention on gaining ground for additional arts funding through NCLB.  While the arts are considered a “core” subject within the federal program, funding has been at issue as math, science and reading have garnered more public attention.

Music educators refocus their efforts when Congress considers reauthorization of NCLB each year.  2007 was no different, as media outlets, educators and researchers kept a close eye on legislative debate on education funding.

MENC, the National Association for Music Education is a great resource for current research on the benefits of music and its impact on the K-12 education curriculum.  Below are two links, the first being a link to an MENC web page that summarizes some of the most current research on the topic.  The second is a pdf file which includes similar information in a concise handout form.  This works well in discussions with school administrators and parent organizations.  You may also find a link to the MENC homepage in our Music Advocacy section.
