Overall Participation
75% of American adults were active in a school music program
51% were involved in chorus
42% were involved in formal instrumental instruction
35% were active in band or orchestra
14% were part of an informal group such as a garage band
12% took formal vocal lessons

Level of Higher Education
65% of American adults with a high school education participated in music
81% with some college participated in music
86% of those with a college degree participated in music
88% with a postgraduate degree participated in music

Higher Income Levels
74% of people with household income less than $34,999 participated in music
72% of households with incomes $35,000-$49,999
75% of households with incomes $50,000-$74,999
78% of households with incomes $75,000-$99,999
78% of households with incomes $100,000-$149,999
83% o households with incomes $150,000+

Participation by Gender
80% of women vs. 70% of men participated in school music programs

Participation by Ethnicity
80% of African American, 75% of whites, and 73% of Hispanics participated

Participation by Generation
83% of Echo Boomers (ages 18-30)
76% of Gen X (31-42)
74% of Baby Boomers (43-61)
69% of Mature Adults (62+)
