What can notation software do for me?

In general, notation software first and foremost allows the user to write music with either a pre-designed score template or create their own. Before computers, there were really only 2 ways to write music: by hand or use a clunky, expensive and semi-rare typewriter. Writing by hand took a long time and was often full of scribbled out notes and mistakes. Typewriters, however convenient they might have been, were full of trouble and headaches.

ImageThat is the basic thing that notation software can do, but that is not all. These programs are often now full of plug-ins that help the user design music to fit rules and styles. Not to mention the user has the ability to use a digital keyboard or even an electronic drum kit equipped with MIDI capabilities to input notes and rhythms.

The initial users of these programs range from professional composers and arrangers to teachers to junior high students. Mostly anybody who can read music and understands the general concepts of notes and rhythms can use these programs. Many teachers will use these in their classes to help teach basic musicianship. Professional (and amateur) composers and arrangers make a living using these programs. Students can use these to help build their creativity and learn about music.
