ARRA Funding - The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009Recovery Logo

What is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009?

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) is the economic stimulus package enacted by the 111th United States Congress of February 2009. The Act of Congress was based largely on proposals made by President Barack Obama and was intended to provide a stimulus to the U.S. economy in the wake of the economic downturn. The measures are nominally worth $787 billion. The Act includes federal tax cuts, expansion of unemployment benefits and other social welfare provisions, and domestic spending in education, health care, and infrastructure, including the energy sector.

The overall goals of the ARRA are to stimulate the economy in the short term and invest in education and other essential public services to ensure the long-term economic health of our nation. The success of the education part of the ARRA will depend on the shared commitment and responsibility of students, parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, education boards, college presidents, state school chiefs, governors, local officials, and federal officials. Collectively, we must advance ARRA's short-term economic goals by investing quickly, and we must support ARRA's long-term economic goals by investing wisely, using these funds to strengthen education, drive reforms, and improve results for students from early learning through post-secondary education.

OK, so what does that mean for me?

Part of the ARRA funding is allocated for domestic spending in education and those funds can be applied toward materials for classrooms. With fiscal challenges facing many state governments, ARRA funding can provide a way to help offset potential budgetary losses as well as add to your classroom. One of the guiding principles of ARRA funding is to improve student achievement through school improvement and reform. We feel investment in quality, long-lasting educational products fit within these guidelines, and we at West Music pride ourselves on selecting products that will be a solid investment for the future.

So how much money are we talking here?
