Coralville, Iowa Band and Orchestra Instrument Repair


Bryce Bernard

Bryce Bernard, from Dallas Center, IA, plays clarinet, saxophone and guitar. A recent graduate of the Minnesota State College Southeast Technical in Red Wing, he is working in our Coralville store on woodwinds and brass, and is happy to be at West Music. In his free time, Bryce enjoys singing, biking, movies and writing music.

Jeff Wilson

Jeff repairs violins, violas, cellos, and string bass. He also does bow work, including rehairing.

He apprenticed into the position, and has been repairing orchestral string instruments for West Music since 2000.

Mark Fiagle

Mark has been with West Music since 1986. He specializes in saxophone, flute and bassoon repair and is qualified to work on all brands of Woodwind instruments.

He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1981 with a degree in Music Performance and attended Red Wing Vo-Tech in 1985-86, where he gathered experience working on both woodwind and brass instruments.

Mark enjoys traveling with his family, as well as volunteering at his church.

Dave Holzhammer

Dave has been with West Music since 1982. He started in the shipping department and moved pianos, but transitioned into an apprenticeship program with then repair technician, Burt Bonebreak. Since 1986, Dave has been a West Music brass technician, specializing in trumpets, trombones, French horns, and tubas. He has extensive experience in dent removal and soldering. Doctor Dave can make anything look new again!

In his free time, Dave enjoys biking, running, and golf.

Kevin Halbrooks

Kevin is the Head Luthier for West Music. He graduated from Minnesota State Technical College in Red Wing with degrees in Violin Repair, Guitar Repair and Building, along with certification in Advanced Finishing and Electric Construction. After finishing his degree work, Kevin apprenticed at the Amati Violin Shop in Houston, Texas with the award winning violin-maker Peter Shaw. Kevin joined the West Music Band and Orchestra Repair team in 2012.

Kevin is a local builder with a strong passion in violin and viola construction and has built and finished several instruments from scratch.

Emily Halbrooks

Emily graduated in 2009 from the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts with a focus in violin performance. She continued her education earning a degree in Violin Repair from Minnesota State Technical College in Red Wing. Emily joined the West Music team in 2014, after completing an apprenticeship with the Noble Brother’s Violin Shop in Colorado.

As West Music Orchestra’s Educational Specialist, Emily supports school orchestra programs and educators throughout Eastern Iowa through weekly service visits. Though Emily’s experience as a Certified Luthier, she provides school music programs with on the spot repairs, instrument consultation, and product knowledge from a unique perspective.

Andy Taylor

Andy has been trained on all woodwind and brass instruments and specializes in woodwinds, clarinets, oboes, flutes, and piccolos.

He graduated from Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical in Red Wing Minnesota in 1995, and has been at West Music ever since.

He's had a number of memorable "repair moments," including an emergency repair for the Lincoln Center jazz band.

Marion, Iowa Band and Orchestra Instrument Repair


Peter Hart

Peter has repaired band instruments at West Music since 1991. He earned his BM in saxophone performance from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1980 and his MM from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester New York in 1982. In 1986, he received his Band Instrument Repair degree at Red Wing in Minnesota.

In addition to his duties at West Music, Peter teaches saxophone through the Cedar Rapids Symphony School and plays professionally with the Iowa Vanguard Jazz Collective, Funk Stop, the Rod Pierson Big Band, Thelonious Assault, the Manny Lopez Big Band and the Dennis McPartland Schoolhouse Jazz Band.

Mallory Christopher

Mallory is a 2011 graduate of the Band Instrument Repair program at Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical in Red Wing, Minnesota. She has been doing repair since graduating, and has been with West Music since 2014.

Prior to repair, Mallory graduated from the University of Iowa in 2006 and taught band for 4 years before going to repair school.

In her free time, Mallory enjoys cooking, biking, reading, playing bassoon, and watching TV.

Cedar Falls, Iowa Band and Orchestra Instrument Repair


Tim Oldre

Tim is a 2005 graduate from Northwestern College with a Bachelor degree in music. Tim is also a 2006 graduate from Minnesota State Technical College with a degree in instrument repair.

Tim repairs band instruments in Cedar Falls with an emphasis on brass instruments.

As a trombone and tuba player, Tim has kept active in the community playing his horns. Tim is also active in his church helping with the sound system.

Jay Ramsey

Jay is a Cedar Falls repair technician. He's a 2003 graduate of Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical in Red Wing Minnesota. He also holds a degree in music education from the University of Northern Iowa.

Jay repairs non-string band instruments of all types. He's been with West Music since 2005.

He enjoys playing saxophone and clarinet with various groups and shows in eastern Iowa.

Moline, Illinois Band and Orchestra Instrument Repair


Andrew Ross

Andrew is qualified to work on brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion. He attended Minnesota State College-Southeast Tech (Red Wing). After graduation in 2009 he worked as a repair tech for Sam Ash Music in New York City.

As a drummer he is a rare gem in the brass and wind repair world.

Kim Saito

Kim is the instrument repair specialist at our Moline, IL location. She has extensive training in repairs on all woodwind and brass instruments. In addition, her specialty is repairing and regulating professional handmade flutes in collaboration with West Music Company's Flute Authority team. Kim also repairs orchestral string instruments.

She graduated from Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical, in Red Wing, Minnesota in 2006, and also graduated from Iowa State University in 2005 with her Bachelor of Arts in Music. Her main performance instrument is the clarinet.

Kim takes great pride in the quality of her repairs, and she understands that a perfect performance can only be achieved with a well regulated, well playing instrument.

Dubuque, Iowa Band and Orchestra Instrument Repair


Ben Schildgen

Ben handles woodwind and brass repair on all makes and models at West Music in Dubuque.

He's a 1985 graduate of Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical in Red Wing Minnesota and has been with West Music since 2003.

He likes hunting and fishing, other outdoor activities, and spending time with family.

Derek Combs

Derek has been repairing in Dubuque with West Music since 2003. He graduated in 2003 from Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City, Iowa with an A.A.S. degree in Band Instrument Repair Technology. Derek is qualified to repair and restore all brass, woodwind, double reed, and percussion instruments.

In his spare time he plays drums, and volunteers in his community with the Dubuque Jaycees.
