Alfred's Music Tech Series: Composing Music With Notation is designed for late elementary to high school students, and can be used in groups or individually. No previous experience with music notation software or music theory is required!

With Composing Music With Notation, students will:

  • have a broader understanding of the elements of music
  • become familiar with the operation of notation software
  • compose melodies and accompaniments, and
  • arrange songs using notation software!

Composing Music With Notation is organized into five units, each including progressive and supplemental activities for practice and reinforcement. Topics include:

  • Unit 1: Entering a Song - entering, editing, printing, adding expressions, composing lyrics
  • Unit 2: Arranging - identifying patterns in music, copying and pasting, reconstructing songs, harmonizing songs
  • Unit 3: 16-Bar Song Form - listening to, analyzing, and composing songs in 16-bar form
  • Unit 4: Jazz - Dixieland, swing, partner songs, creating a rhythm section, 12-bar blues
  • Unit 5: Theme and Variations - listening to, analyzing and composing melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic variations
  • Appendix: An overview of the rules of notation and the fundamentals of music

Companion Data CD
Each lesson includes activity files located on Data CD. These files are compatible with most music notation programs, with specific files for Finale and Sibelius (programs not included). Many of the activities can be completed with demonstration software, available for free online, from these publishers.
