I have purchased this item for the past four years with amazing results for my students. In our program, this instrument is used by pre-K/Kindergarten children over the period of a year or more and we have an zero instances of decline of quality or disrepair. BEST ANSWER: You would use the noter stick in place of fretting the strings with your fingers. It's not required to use the stick, but it is a popular option.
