The Carnival of the Animals
New verses by Jack Prelutsky
Illustrated by Mary GrandPre

Welcome to our carnival,
Where birds and beasts and such
Behave a lot like people do,
At times a bit too much.

Camille Saint-Saens composed The Carnival of the Animals in 1886 to express in music some of the silly habits his friends shared with animals. Now, in America's first Children's Poet Laureate, Saint-Saens has found a worthy collaborator, someone who has captured the humor and beauty, the rhythms and cadence, the feeling of the music in catchy, fun-to-read rhymes. Mary GrandPre adds her own inventive embellishments to these lively animal verses with rich mixed-media illustrations that gallop, hop, tromp, trip, fly and glide across the page.

A CD of the music is included, along with dramatic readings of each of the verses by Jack Prelutsky himself.

A note to parents and teachers by the head of the music department of the distinguished Rudolf Steiner School in New York is also included.

The Lion
Rooster and Hens
The Donkeys of the Wild
