Chairs to Mend
Adapted by Sue Melton
Hardcover and CD
Grades 3 - 4
Age 8-10 years
21 pages

Fictional story about a true folk song that came from the song chants presented by sellers and merchants. In this story, a young girl brings the folk song Chairs to Mend to life after listening to street cries in her 1880's Boston neighborhood.

Word-for-word narration on the accompanying CD uses a variety of singing voices and provides a good vocal model for healthy singing. The song is notated in the book.

Just saw this at a workshop and can't wait to use it with my 4th graders for tom-ti. The story with song embedded will be a lot more fun and memorable than my narrative about street cries...
