Colonial Social Dancing
By Charles Cyril Hendrickson
Book and CD
108 pages; approx. 62 min.

A complete instructor's handbook for teaching children the basic steps and figures of dancing country dances, cotillions, jigs, and reels from George Washington's time. Five of the tunes are recognizable as they have survived to this day with lyrics far less refined than their original settings. Each dance gives the formation, tune title, number of bars, notation of the melody line with chord letters and also A and B sections of the music marked, directions and sequence, what's new, and helpful hints or alternate options. Where possible, instructions are given for how to alter the dance to make it a no-hand-contact dance. Period advertisements and descriptions, historical notes, sources, and a bibliography expand the practical material for those who wish to look further.

All of the music on the included CD uses sampled sounds derived from recordings of actual instruments. The liner notes give the instruments used and brief notes about each tune.

Does the book indicate which dances were done in certain parts of the country? For instance, we live in Virginia. Does the book specify dances known in Virginia in colonial times?
