Solid wood tone drum with 3 tongues produces warm and appealing rhythms. Playing it is easy and enjoyable. You can use the rubber mallet to lightly strike the tongues or play the drum with your fingers. Around for hundreds of years initially they were played for story-telling and communication rhythms.

The slit/tone drum is one of the world's oldest instruments. Slit drums have been a part of African, Asian, and South American cultures for hundreds of years. In the beginning they were used for story-telling and communication. Playing it is easy and enjoyable. You can use the rubber mallet to lightly strike the tongues or play the drum with your fingers. There are no "wrong notes" you can create different rhythms and tones by playing the different tongues/slits.

Why did you choose this?
West Music Store
It's a small, good quality drum that also has a couple of pitches due to being a slit drum. Great for little ones!

How large is the drum. I am playing "the Little Drummer Boy" for Christmas with my Ovation guitar and want to have a 8 year old child play the drum as background?
A shopper on Nov 12, 2013
Best Answer: I would think that the size would work fine, I can't put my hands on it right now but think it's about 8-9" across. Keep in mind though that it's a tone drum so has specific pitches (I can't tell you what they are since it's not here with me). So you might want to consider a small frame drum if all you want is the rhythm and drum sound, rather than a pitch.

Would a 6-year enjoy it? I got his name from an "angel tree," so I don't know him. He wants a drum set, but I have no idea if he is homeless, in a foster home, etc., and whether it would be a good choice from the point of view of the adults in his life for him to have a drum set. Plus I've already spent a bit on him.

Best Answer: The Hohner Kids HO825 Wood Tone/Slit Drum is really great, and has wonderful tones. I bought it for my 13 month old twin granddaughters to have at my house and to bring over to their house when I come over. They have been attending Music Together, a family music lesson program and the instructor has a variety of drums she gets out for the class to play. I'm sure that a six year old would find the drum fun, but I'm not sure how long that interest would last if he doesn't have encouragement from adults in his life. Hope this helps. Bonnie Slayton

Are the mallets available separately from the drum?
We are looking for sturdy rubber mallets for children 5 years and younger to play instruments with.
Robin M on Jun 13, 2013
Best Answer: We do not carry that mallet separately. The closest thing that we would have would be the American Drum shortened Early Childhood mallets. Item 253926.
