Interactive Folksongs
Multimedia Lessons for the Music Class
by Cristi Cary Miller
Book and CD-ROM
47 pages
Grades 2 - 5

This collection of 8 folksongs (four for younger and four for older students) and interactive lessons will streamline your lesson preparation time and engage your students. The slides guide students through the process of learning the songs as they explore rhythm, melody, ear training and sight-reading. Each lesson contains accompaniments for Orff instruments that can be shown through interactive software and a giant barred instrument. Sound files are embedded on the music page to assist with teaching the melody.

Even if you are not using Orff instruments with a lesson, there are ways to use this resource. Each lesson has ideas for incorporating unpitched instruments and body percussion, as well as ideas for rhythmic and melodic reading. Songs are shown notated on the treble clef with lyrics. In the book, each lesson plan shows each slide used with teaching suggestions to guide you through the process. An additional activity to enhance the folksong is given at the end of each lesson.
