Kodály Method I

Third Edition

Comprehensive Music Education

By Lois Choksy

Book

 303 pages

Grades preK - 6

The Kodály Method I and The Kodály Method II: Folksong to Masterworks are dedicated to the proposition that Kodaly’s vision is worthy and achievable and to the belief that it is both possible and imperative to bring the riches of music to all.

This third edition of The Kodály Method I has 200 songs which are indexed and analyzed for tone set, meter, rhythm, and form. Most of the songs are pentatonic and small scale songs with numerous songs in diatonic major, minor, and modal scales. The collection contains simple, compound, and asymmetric meters and all the usual rhythm patterns.

In this edition the teaching of 6/8 is carried out in stages beginning in kindergarten and first grade and continuing through fourth grade.  Many 6/8 songs are included.  Teaching the eighth note followed by a dotted quarter note has been moved to the grade five level.

Lesson planning is treated comprehensively and chapter eight is new to this edition. In this chapter the author describes both long range planning and specific lesson design.
