Kwanzaa Suite
By Stan Spotswood
Binder and CD

9 original songs in unison or 2 parts, with historical background, narration, piano and percussion accompaniment. The songs use a variety of musical styles to show the history and meaning of Kwanzaa; they may be sung individually, or used with the included narration to present a 35-minute program.

Teacher guide (binder) includes the history, meaning and traditions of Kwanzaa; a resource guide; movement and performance suggestions; a rehearsal plan; copy-permissible lyrics sheets; accompaniments (permission given to copy the score for use within 1 classroom or choral performance); and a CD with a full performance featuring the Appalachian Children's Choir and also accompaniment tracks. Perfect for winter concerts or Kwanzaa celebrations in school, home, or community settings.

  • Kwanzaa (upbeat, contemporary song)
  • The 7 Principles of Kwanzaa (funky style with a strong bass part underneath)
  • Umoja (ballad with a gospel feel)
  • Kujichagulia (percussion ensemble with short melody and rap section; optional Orff instrument arrangement)
  • Ujima (interwoven voices and meaningful rap, in a hip-hop style)
  • Ujamaa (optional Orff instrument arrangement and dramatic improvisation)
  • Nia (syncopated rhythm with a melody evocative of northern Africa)
  • Kuumba (driving percussion, strong melody and propulsive Afro-Caribbean rhythm, with a rap section)
  • Imani (ballad with an R & B feel)
