Anyone who has spent time learning the ukulele has probably noticed that most ukuleles, even right after being tuned, sound out of tune when played further up the neck. The reason for this is poor intonation. The open strings can be perfectly in tune, but if the length from bridge to nut is not correct any fretted note will be slightly off, and will sound even more off the further you travel up the neck.
After three years of research into this common issue, Lanikai can developed a solution that boasts a 90% improvement in upper-fret intonation. They accomplished this by first adding a compensated nut. By increasing the distance between the nut and the first fret they were able to drastically improve the tone of open chords. They also added a feature that is pretty revolutionary as far as acoustic instruments go: a movable saddle. By giving players the ability to adjust the saddle under each string individually without needing a tool, Lanikai has given you complete control of your instrument’s intonation.
