The Magic Fish and the Little Red Hen
By Ruth Boshkoff
Two delightful folk tales using Orff instruments to sing, act, and play. With minimum rehearsal either tale could be prepared in 1-2 classroom periods. Either the teacher or a student narrates; instrumentalists are directed by the teacher with body cues; main parts can be spoken or sung. Other possibilities include drama, mime, and hand or shadow puppets.
For grades 2, 3, or 4, depending on which setting of the walking theme is used.
Instruments used: alto & bass xylophone; temple blocks; finger cymbals; triangle; slide whistles; hand drums; sand blocks.
Magic Fish parts: narrator, fish, fisherman, old woman, old man, chorus.
Little Red Hen parts: narrator, cat, dog, mouse, chorus, red hen.
