Studio 49 Rotary Timpani have a central, very precise rotary tuning mechanism, which enables fast and simple tuning by turning the timpani shell.  There is no need to adjust any screws, which are used only to balance or correct skin tension from time to time.  The timpani have natural skin heads, which produce a warmer timbre than the somewhat dry sound of plastic heads.

The Studio 49 Timpani are sold individually and available in four sizes:

  • 12" Head Diameter (Item 202440)
  • 14" Head Diameter (Item 202441)
  • 16" Head Diameter (Item 202442)
  • 18" Head Diameter (Item 202443)

Please note, mallets are not included and are pictured for reference only.

I feel very foolish, but I really thought I was getting a pair of timps with the smaller one having a 12" head...just one for that price? Wow. I know I should have been more thorough. Maybe the picture here should be changed? I did not get mallets either.

Best Answer: I am sorry you misunderstood the details about the Studio 49 timpani. All four drums are pictured as there is a dropdown list from which you can select the size drum you want. The photo is designed to show the relationship of the different sizes.

These drums are expensive, as they are very costly to produce. The drums have a mechanism that tunes the head to a specific pitch, and then holds it there until the next pitch is needed. Additionally, the drums are hand made in Germany.

We’ve reviewed the listing and understand why there might have been confusion, especially as the mallets are concerned, as they are not included with the drums. We have made changes to the wording to try to prevent this in the future.
