My elementary school currently has no pitched percussion. I am writing a grant for up to $1500 to purchase pitched percussion. Can you compare/contrast the 1600 Series alto xylophone with the 1000 Series alto xylophone? Should I be looking at alto xylophones or soprano xylophones? I would like to purchase 2 or 3 of the same instrument.

BEST ANSWER: I purchased a Studio 49 1600 series AX to supplement the instruments I already had. It was my first Studio 49 instrument. I LOVE it. It has a beautiful sound and has held up very nicely. I blends well enough with the fiberglass Sonor instruments I already had, though it's a bit louder. I don't know anything about the 1000 series.

I would strongly recommend you get all alto instruments, or two altos and one soprano. The reason for this is that if you choose to have the students play them for accompaniment to their own singing, they will be able to play in a register that is lower than their singing, wheras the soprano instruments would be in the same register or higher. The lower instruments really fill out the sound. If you ever have the opportunity to purchase a bass xylophone, you will be amazed at how much depth it adds! (I have the Sonor Palisono short bass, which is enough for my kids.)

Hope you enjoy whatever you choose!
