The Squeaky Door
Retold by Margaret Read MacDonald
Pictures by Mary Newell DePalma
Based on the Puerto Rican folk song, "La Cama," this is the story of a little boy who visits Grandma and gets to sleep in the big brass bed all alone. But he is scared by the squeaking door as Grandma says goodnight. Grandma adds a new animal to sleep with the little boy to keep him company, but the door keeps squeaking. An excellent example of sound exploration - readers can have fun with the "squeak" sound and reading with suspense and different voices.
