Musical Folktales of the World
Edited by Norma Livo
Nearly 40 stories from around the world celebrating the universal language of music. Stories are organized by theme, including Music All Around Us, Drums, Musical Miracles, Flutes and Pan Pipes, and Musicians and Musical Animals. A wide variety of recommendations are given for activities and for extending the stories - ideas are listed at the end of each section. Activities range from visiting and interviewing a local instrument maker, finding out information about various instruments, conducting surveys, and researching composers to give a report while playing that composer's music, to building your own original instrument, taking a nature walk to find instruments in nature (seed pod rattles, etc.), illustrating the stories, and making recordings of appropriate natural sound effects to use during stories.
