Ukulele in the Classroom Teacher Edition Book 1
C6 Tuning (g, c, e, a)
By James Hill and J. Chalmers Doane
Spiral-bound book
54 pages

The Ukulele in the Classroom series is a performance-based ukulele method through which students explore elements of music including melody, harmony, rhythm, form, tempo, dynamics and tone. The skills developed include singing, picking, strumming, ear training, sight-reading and music theory. Exercises and repertoire are arranged to accomodate many levels of skill simultaneously.

This hands-on, performance-based ukulele method includes:

  • Traditional music from around the world
  • Popular songs
  • Classical and Baroque melodies
  • Creative skill-building exercises
  • Singing, picking, strumming and more!

The series can be used in a wide variety of settings - classroom, private music studio, group instruction (camps, clubs, retreats) or individual study at home. The primary purpose of the series is to engage students in a process that develops musicianship and positive attitudes toward music.

Book 1 begins with an emphasis on melodic teachniques to allow coordination of the left hand to develop methodically in order to ensure a relaxed technique and to avoid potential injury. Singing is crucial and most of the arrangements in Book 1 include lyrics.

Unit 4 introduces chords and strumming, although there are chord symbols included for most of the pieces in the previous units.

The Teacher Edition includes chords for all repertoire as well as a chord reference chart. Each student page is also shown in the Teacher Edition. The music selections are recorded on a CD, item 852895. The Student Book 1 is item# 838423.

There are also Student Edition Book 2 item# 838425 and Teacher Edition Book 2 item# 838426 in the series.
