Our Perspective

Yamaha is a brand well known in the music world so start your beginning recorder player out right with the Yamaha recorders.  When my daughter was in elementary school, she had to have one of each of the three translucent models, and quickly designed her very own tri-toned version.  Well, at least until everyone else in class decided to follow suit and share some of their parts too! See items 400289 and 400291 for the other colors! -Judy

  • Double holes; C-C#, D-D#
  • Three piece construction
  • Baroque fingering
  • Recorder is 12-3/4" long.
  • Includes a carrying bag and fingering chart.  Yamaha recorders do not include a cleaning rod!  We recommend purchasing item# 450806 (Basic Beat Recorder Cleaning Rod).

Recorder Care:

  1. After playing, wipe out moisture inside of recorder (use a lint-free gauze or cloth); then put the recorder in it's case. Use item # 450806 - Recorder Cleaning Rod with the cloth.
  2. The labium (where the air flows in the front of the recorder just under the mouthpiece), and section immediately surrounding it, is the most important part for sound production.  Be careful not to damage it in any way.
  3. The mouthpiece section is the part most easily dirtied;always keep it clean. Wipe the outer surface clean whenever it becomes dirty. NEVER use benzine or methyl alcohol.
  4. Use recorder cream around the joints when assemblying your recorder.

Which recorder is best for left-handed students? I don't see any left hand option...
A shopper on May 2, 2013
Best Answer: Recorders are all meant to be played the same way, whether a student is left-handed or not. The left hand goes on top and the right hand at the bottom. This is how other woodwinds like clarinets, oboes and saxes works as well. For a flute it is similar but held to the side, with left hand closer to the face. The holes are slightly offset to fit the usual lengths of the fingers that belong to the hole. I find that it's often easier for left-handed students to begin correctly, if you start with the usual BAG, because they will use their left hand at first. Right-handed students need frequent reminders to use their left hand on top! If you have a student with missing or non-working fingers, you can buy adaptive recorders, which come in about 6 different pieces that you put together to suit the individual's particular hands. West Music has those, or at least they used to.
