Yamaha has combined quality and durability to bring you their 20 Series Recorders. Made of ABS resin, these lightweight recorders feature precise, uniform intonation, making them perfect for beginners.

Specifications:

  • Key of C
  • Double holes; C-C#, D-D#
  • Three piece construction
  • Baroque fingering
  • Recorder is 12-3/4" long.
  • Includes a drawstring ivory cloth carrying bag and fingering chart.  Yamaha recorders do not include a cleaning rod!  We recommend purchasing the Harmony Recorder Cleaning Rod (450806).

Recorder Care:

  1. After playing, wipe out moisture inside of recorder (use a lint-free gauze or cloth) plus a recorder cleaning rod; then put the recorder in it's case.
  2. The labium (where the air flows in the front of the recorder just under the mouthpiece), and section immediately surrounding it, is the most important part for sound production.  Be careful not to damage it in any way.
  3. The mouthpiece section is the part most easily dirtied;always keep it clean. Wipe the outer surface clean whenever it becomes dirty. NEVER use benzine or methyl alcohol.
  4. Use recorder cream around the joints when assemblying your recorder.

I've used the translucents. When give the choice, some kids selected the ivory color. The translucent Yamahas have stayed in tune, have a good sound, and are affordable. I assume these will have the same qualities.

The Yamaha are of excellent quality and have served me very well. The colored recorders are just plain fun to look at and generate conversation. Since receiving this model, I have learned that it does very well with the high notes.

Dalia G on Aug 21, 2012
I have used this recorder for years. The bottom separate piece is useful w/ little hands. It can be adjusted to the right so that the pinky finger can reach the C - hole. Also, the light color makes it easy to see if fingers aren't covering the finger holes. In addition, I prefer the weight of the Yamaha. I want my students to feel like they are playing a quality instrument, not a "toy".

Is this a good instrument for a 5 yrs. old to play?
A shopper on Nov 25, 2013
BEST ANSWER: It would be a challenge for a 5 year old to play correctly. Covering the holes would be difficult for a small hand, and it required fine motor skills which are beyond most 5 year olds. However, lots of youngsters get recorders and play them like a whistle until they grow into them or get personal instruction.
Do you recommend purchasing the cleaning rod as well, or is it really necessary?
Rebecca D on Jan 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I don't find a cleaning rod necessary. I teach my students to brush their teeth before playing and if they need to clean out their recorder, rinse it with warm water works well. If one needs to disinfect it, use a little vinegar water, or diluted mouth wash with a disinfectant. Then rinse well. It can even be cleaned in the dishwasher - just be sure the heating element is off.
What's the F and Bb Fingerings?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2012
BEST ANSWER: F = three fingers and thumb of left hand/pointer, ring and pinky fingers of right hand.
Bb = pointer, ring and thumb of left hand/pointer finger of right hand.

Do you still carry German fingering?

Is the case durable? With some other brands I have noticed that the drawstring hem will come undone and that the string itself will break at the seam. I would like to get two years use out of the recorder and case for my students.
Virginia W on Feb 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The recorder itself is very durable and great quality! The case drawstring is rather flimsy and can come off easily if your students use the case regularly/pull too hard to tighten it. The bag doesn't rip easily and is made to be mostly waterproof (except opening) material and kids can enjoy drawing on the case instead of the recorder if you wish to have them personalize it. Overall, great recorder, below average case.
Is baroque fingering better for children beginners than german?
A shopper on Oct 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Baroque fingering is most common, This is because it translates better to beginning band instruments and is easier to play in tune.
How long does it take to get it?
A shopper on Aug 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Please contact us at service@westmusic.com regarding shipping estimates
Is the carrying bag made of cotton? I'm looking to wash the carrying bags my students use, but I don't want them to shrink.
A shopper on Jun 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure they will hold up to washing. They appear to be a cotton canvas but they are not super great quality.
Can you get different colors?
A shopper on Feb 5, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Greetings shopper ~ Yamaha...YRS-24B is only offered in Ivory. YRS-20B = 3-piece soprano recorders from Yamaha are available in 3 color options & utilize the same quality material & design specs as the YRS-24B. Translucent color choices offered for the YRS-20B currently = Blue...YRS-20BB + Green...YRS-20BG + Pink...YRS-20BP. I own both YRS-24B + YRS-20BB (blue) and I personally favor the blue simply due to its jewel like, color appearance!
