Zimbabwe Children's Singing Games
By Natalie Kreutzer

20 singing games and dances in the Shona language for children from 3-10 years, with instructions for adult interpretation. Includes 5 chants, 7 songs, 5 two-part songs, a lullaby, and 2 dances. Based on field tapes of children from the Nharira Communal lands in central Zimbabwe, collected by Kreutzer in 1992-94. Please note: the footage was taped by an amateur (not a professional camera-person).

The DVD gives the cultural context of the songs, video footage of games beingplayed with game instructions, approximate notation of the songs, and instrumental accompaniment and native-speaker pronunciation guide. Features on the DVD include: each piece shown with commentary and also without commentary; pronunciation text(spoken slowly in rhythm of the song); musical notation with sound clips; translation; and box notation for instrumental accompaniment. A good reference for teachers.

For teachers, for use with children ages 3-10.

Recommended by prof of class as a required material. Probably because this is the only source for this product.
