Creating the Perfect Practice Space

Parents support their child's musical journey by providing equipment and establishing good practice habits. Setting up a dedicated practice space at home is an important first step for success.

Here’s how to start:

  1. Minimize distractions as best as possible. Dedicate a quiet room or space with everything necessary, including sheet music and a music stand, to help with consistency and focus.
  2. Make sure there is proper lighting in the room for maximum playability. If possible, add storage bins, a table, or shelves to keep all the necessary accessories organized. A clean space helps the mind be able to focus on what matters.
  3. When setting up the area, include different items or notes that will remind your child of their goals. This helps them stay encouraged throughout practice, and not just before or after in conversation.
  4. Encourage regular practice and help them stick to a routine. A consistent practice schedule that aligns with your child’s daily routine not only helps them get better at their craft, but also teaches discipline and will power.
  5. Embrace the tools around us. Smartphones or tablets are a part of our everyday lives now, so instead of banning them from practice and only seeing them as a distraction, figure out ways to incorporate them with different music apps or using play-along tracks.
