Description
Brummitt-Taylor Listening Program A Non-Directed Approach By David Brummitt;and Karen Taylor Spiral-bound Book and;set of 8 CDs 212 pages,Unique 5-year plan for daily, school-wide listening to music using a non-directed approach; includes over 8 hours of music and 131 musical examples. Taking less than 5 minutes each day, listening becomes part of the elementary school routine. Through repeated listening to the composition of the week, students gain a lively curiosity about how composers do what they do. By the end of the 5-year cycle kids will have made contact with a rich range of consensually "great" music. Selections cover a 4-century range from Palestrina to Stravinsky, Renaissance to 20th century, and every major musical art form from solo performance through chamber ensemble, chamber orchestra, string orchestra, chorus, and symphony. A manual explains the program design, implementation, 131 "scripts" for the daily commentary, and suggestions for extension. Daily scripts are in the following format: day 1 introduces the composer & composition; days 2-4 rephrase;and expand the description of the chosen characteristic- highlighted phrases show the sentence form that, when used consistently, points to the thinking processes of the composer; day 5 is a summary day;and also asks the students if they remember the name of the composer. The same piece is listened to all 5 days- specific compositional techniques and artistic effects achieved by a composer are brought to the attention of the listener. Includes a set of 8 CDs of all the music.; Contents: Chapter 1: The Origin of the Program- Introduction, The First District Implementation of the Program.Chapter 2: Guiding Principles, Aims, & Objectives- Also Observable Results.Chapter 3: Program Design- Composer & Composition of the Week, The Scripts, 5-year Plan, Criteria for Selecting Music, Length of Composition (5 minutes max.), Use of Excerpts (with the exception of opera & ballet music, complete compositions or entire movements from compositions have been chosen).Chapter 4: Implementation- Acceptance of the Program, Organizing the Program, Other Considerations, Summary.Chapter 5: Responding to Students Responding to Music- Spontaneous Comments, Spontaneous Questions, Teacher-initiated Discussion, Summary.Chapter 6: Extensions for Non-directed Listening- "I Have an Idea", Simple Extensions, More Elaborate Extensions.Chapter 7: The Scripts.Glossary of Musical Terms Bibliography Appendices
