Grades PreK - Middle School

Master teachers, Lopez-Ibor and Maschat present a collection of songs, games, dances, stories and instrumental pieces from each of the Spanish-speaking countries in Central and South America. The authors have chosen music from the indigenous populations, from the African tradition brought in by the slaves, from the mestizo style mixing local and foreign elements and from the Spanish Colonialists whose old songs changed in the new world.

Materials for all age groups - preschool through middle school - are included with extension ideas. All the musical arrangements were written to respect the features of the original style, with suggestions for traditional percussion where possible. Some use Orff instruments. Several instrument building projects are included to promote exploration of Latin American music. Included with each song is a literal translation of the text. In most cases, lyrics are short enough to be taught by rote.

Two stories - a creation myth and a fable - are included that invite further development. Two songs in Quechua, an Indian dialect, are included as well as 3 villancicos (Spanish Christmas carols).

The included DVD has practical demonstrations of the dances. They are marked with DVD in the contents below.

  • Great Resource but best for Upper-Elementary&Middle School
This is a great resource to perform folk music from Latin America; however, I do not recommend this source for elementary. There are some pieces that are suited for 4th grade, but I find that some of the rhythmic and melodic material does not follow the Kodaly sequence.
