By Timothy Rice. (Subtitle: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture). This case-study volume can be used along with the core Global Music Series books, Teaching Music Globally and Thinking Musically (item MUCA1438 for the set of two books, available separately). Each case study book uses the contemporary musical situation as a point of departure, covering historical information and traditions as they relate to the present. This is a focused introduction to the rich and varied tradition of Bulgarian music. It demonstrates how Bulgarian music, in addition to being an art and an entertainment, is deeply embedded in the cultural, social, economic, and political life of the country. Timothy Rice analyzes how this music has spread to other cultures and how it has made its mark on new forms of popular music. Brief lessons on how ethnomusicologists conduct their research are also included, as well as a few melodic notations and dance directions. The included 70-minute CD contains examples of the music discussed in the book.
