Music for Children, Vol. 3 Upper Elementary

In each of the 3 parts of this book, texts and musical phenomena are arranged in sequence according to the psychological development of the children, increasing technical difficulties and areas of learning.

Part 1 uses pentatonic melodies, bordun accompaniments, and rhythm and speech exercises. Singing is the most important activity. The rhythmic and metric exercises start with simple note values and meters. Syncopated rhythms appear more than in Book II, and a few pieces have changing meter.

Part 2 introduces cadential harmonies. Instrumental playing techniques are more challenging. Movement is integrated with singing and playing.

Part 3 works with less familiar tonal areas, such as those in early and modern music as well as music from other countries. There are also more difficult tasks in improvisation and composition. Movement or dramatic response is part of many of the activities. Listening examples are referred to more often.

For teachers to use with grade 4 to 6.
