The first of 2 volumes in this series. The musical examples are drawn from folk songs and art music encompassing a wide range of historical eras. The examples can be used for developing such skills as sight-reading, dictation, musical memory, rhythmic reading, formal analysis, part singing and improvisation. 

The musical material in this collection is arranged in a sequential manner. The examples begin with patterns based on the minor third and progress through pentatonic, diatonic, and modal scales modulation and chromaticism. Volume 1 covers materials through the extended pentatonic scale. Volume 2 begins with more complex pentatonic materials and progresses through modal and diatonic music. 

Rhythmic elements are presented in a similarly structured fashion, beginning with simple groupings of eighth and quarter notes and progressing through compound meter and patterns including sixteenth notes and syncopation. Each rhythmic element is practiced separately before being integrated with melodic elements. 

All staff placements in Volume 1 are in treble clef.
